About Julie Bell

Background

My passion for art spans more than 20 years.  Painting from my studio in Utley, near Keighley in West Yorkshire, my early influences come from the Abstract Expressionism period due to the freedom of expression created by these artists.

Influences and Inspiration

Working mainly with acrylic on canvas, I am drawn to muted colours, texture and a particular fascination of mine is how nature and objects deteriorate over time - either from the effects of the elements or simply from age.

Whilst representing nature in abstract form, I also love to paint flowers and skies in a simple, contemporary style yet at the same time represented realistically.

My work also uses words, colour and texture together, forming representations that can be interpreted by the individual in an individual way.  These particular paintings are often commission-based, enabling specific themes to be created with unique meaning.  Using a palette knife and my layering technique enables me to explore depth and colour, creating a particular mood or feeling in a painting.

After a successful solo exhibition at The Arts Theatre in the West End of London in 2004 I have worked mainly to commission, with the majority of work gained by recommendation.

For commissioned work, I thoroughly enjoy the process of liasing with clients in creating a piece of artwork that’s unique and special to them.  Getting to know the individual is a key part of the process and with that comes rewarding results.

Current Position

I now show work in selected galleries in the UK, at The British Craft Trade Fair and at various events in Yorkshire.  Details can be seen on the exhibition page.
